BMO03G.   Basic Communications Officer Training Course             40 hrs                   Basic
This is the POST-recognized certification course for communications officers in the State of Georgia. This course must be completed within six (6) months of the date of hire for employees hired after July 1, 1995. Registered Communications Officers wishing to voluntarily certify may apply, however, absolute preference will be given to newly hired individuals. Course work includes: roles of the communications officer, crisis intervention, law enforcement dispatch, fire/hazmat dispatch, EMS dispatch, telephone techniques, liability, communications impaired callers, radio broadcast techniques, and others. This course requires a written and a performance examination final. Designed for the newly hired or inexperienced communications officers, this course will provide a foundation of skills and knowledge upon which departmental on-the-job training should be based.

The 80-hour course is designed for uncertified officers. It provides basic knowledge for persons working in a jail environment. Topics of discussion include: inmate rights, first aid/CPR, facility functions, medical services, self defense, jail climate, transport and security.

This 120-hour certification course is designed for municipal (and county) probation officers. Topics include supervision techniques, interstate compacts, sentencing, intermediate sanctions, sentence termination, data collection, pre-sentence investigation, defensive tactics, firearms, etc.

This course is designed to show the student how to apply Georgia criminal laws and court decisions to real life situations. In addition, the student will be able to distinguish between civil and criminal actions. The action of the first officer at an emergency could make the difference between life and death. The information presented in this course will make officers more aware of what can be done at the scene of an accident or other emergency before medical assistance arrives.

CAB01G.   Health and Wellness                                                  22 hrs               Intermediate
An individual engaged in law enforcement should maintain a high level of physical fitness. Not only is this desirable for being able to enjoy life to the fullest, but for officers it can be a life saver. This course involves workouts paced for the student's individual ability.

In order to effectively handle crisis situations encountered as part of their daily activities, officers need problem identification knowledge and interpersonal skills. This course presents strategies and techniques to improve these skills and calm crisis situations.

CAE01G.   Officer Survival                                                           40 hrs               Intermediate
The life of an officer is frequently jeopardized when a dangerous situation occurs during the performance of "routine" activities. To survive, an officer must be able to recognize and evaluate such situations and take the proper course of action. This course is designed to alert officers to these hazards and provide actions they can take to avoid injury or death.
Required Materials:  baton; flashlight; 5 rounds 12 gauge slug; body armor, if available; 5 rounds 12 gauge 00 buck (9 pellet); departmental issue shotgun, if available; 1 box 12 gauge #9 field load; 300 rounds duty ammo; leather gear. CAG02G.   Advanced Firearms                                                  24 hrs                      Advanced
This course is designed to increase the individual officer's proficiency with the service weapon and shotgun. The course will also make the officer aware of other types of weapons available such as automatic weapons, gas weapons, etc.
Required Materials:   1000 rounds of ammunition; 1 box of 12 gauge no.9 field loads; 10 rounds of 12 gauge 00 buck shot; 5 rounds of 12 gauge slugs; and departmental shotgun, if available. Contact the Academy for further information concerning required materials.

A brief review of composition skills will be given through practical exercises and self-scoring quizzes to help identify areas needing improvement (grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.). The completion of any case depends on the officer recognizing, gathering and collecting all of the physical evidence. This evidence must be presented in court in a logical and clear manner. This course is designed to teach the officer how to recognize and record the evidence and preserve the crime scene. Topics of discussion include crime scene protection, sketching and photographing, note taking and report writing, lab analysis, crime scene search, courtroom testimony, collection of evidence, chain of custody, and rules of evidence.

XXXXXXX.   Advanced Forensic Firearm and Toolmark ID       24 hrs               Specialized
This course will introduce the student to the methods used by firearm and toolmark examiners in the examination of fired bullets, cartridge cases and various kinds of toolmarks. The student will learn how examiners obtain class information that may aid investigators in searching for a firearm or tool that has been used in the commission of a crime including how a fired bullet, cartridge case or tool may be matched to a particular firearm or tool. The course will also explore the reconstruction of shooting incidents, including determination of the range, direction of fire and the identification of gunshot residues. Additionally, advanced instruction will be provided for those individuals who have attended the basic course. The advanced topics of discussion will include lock picking; key making concepts; crime scene processing; reconstruction/trajectory; evidence procedures; death investigation and court-room testimony.

ACD03G.   Animal Control Training Program                         40 hrs                      Specialized
This course focuses on enforcement issues in order to better prepare officers to handle any situation and to establish continuity in the management of animal related issues across the state of Georgia. This course is recommended for all Animal Control officers, regardless of experience. P.O.S.T. certified officers will receive credit for this training upon successful completion of a written final exam and performance test. Instructional topics will include: animal capture and restraint, cruelty investigations, crime scene process, field procedures, animal transport, citizen complaint forms, enforcing county ordinance issuing citations/warrants, officer safety and liability, Georgia state animal laws, wild and exotic animals, etc.

This course is designed to provide law enforcement officers information regarding motorcycle gangs and street gangs that aid in distributing narcotics. Through an overview of gangs, students will become more knowledgeable about the vast network of narcotics as well as methods of gang enforcement. Discussion topics include: street gangs overview, street gangs and narcotics, officer safety, "motel sets," legal issues and street contacts, and prosecution of gang members.

This course contains basic principles and guidelines regarding Basic Level SWAT. It will cover various situations that SWAT officers may encounter. This course will help the student better understand tactical situations. This course is not designed to mandate specific training and does not discount other techniques from other courses or agencies. In this course the student will be exposed to various tools, weapons and techniques that SWAT officers will encounter or use. The course will familiarize officers with different types of entries, woodland operations and vehicle assaults. There will also be live fire drills conducted during the day and nighttime phases which will be combined with entries (Live Fire House).

XXXXXX.   Crisis Intervention Training                                 40 hrs                      Specialized
The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is a dynamic collaboration of professionals committed to people with mental illness and other brain disorders. The CIT program is sponsored by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Mental Health, Development Disabilities, and Addictive Diseases, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, Georgia Sheriff's Association, Inc., and Georgia Public Safety Training Center.

Law enforcement officers who are trained in CIT can effectively assist individuals with mental illness and other brain disorders who are in crisis, therefore advancing public safety and reducing the stigma commonly associated with mental illness. One of our major goals is to train and certify 20% of all Georgia law enforcement officers in CIT by the year 2007.

This two-day course will provide basic information into the field of Forencsic Odontology (Dentistry) for law enforcement investigators. The first day will include an overview of the areas that encompass the field of Forensic Odontology. The second day will focus on the field of Bitemark investigation and analysis. Discussion will include recognition of collection of bitemark evidence. The final part of the discussion will present various methods of analysis as well as some of the pitfalls concerning the use of bitemark evidence in the past.

NBM54G.   Instructor Training Course                                   80 hrs                      Specialized
This course is designed to supply the necessary skills to become an effective instructor. Successful completion of this program satisfies a part of the requirement of P.O.S.T. certification as an instructor. Following satisfactory completion of the probationary period, officers will become State certified instructors. All personnel attending this course will be required to instruct at their local academy. Students who are interested in this course should be aware that good basic writing skills are necessary for successful completion. Final selection of students to attend will be made by the Academy Staff. Acceptance is not based upon space availability at the time applications are received. In order to be considered as a potential student for this course, the student candidate must submit the following: a letter of recommendation from the Chief or Sheriff; a writing sample from the student stating why he/she wants to be an instructor, what talents or qualities he/she possesses that would make him/her an asset to law enforcement instruction, and what specific topics or areas he/she would like to instruct; and an updated resume. Although the course is an 80-hour course, the calendar will reflect a total of 12 days. Time is now restructured to benefit the student to prepare his/her lesson plan without departmental interruption.

ITQ04G.   IACP: Value-Centered Leadership                        16 hrs                      Specialized
This workshop explores the issues and dynamics of ethics and values within the law enforcement agency and in its communication and interaction with community clients. The workshop underscores the importance of agency integrity, and the internal and community strategies through which to develop, reinforce and maintain it for enhanced community relations. Presentations focus on organizational culture and the role of law enforcement in terms of ethics and values and their significance for successful community service. In small groups, attendees will discuss case studies and review their own rules and regulations, policies and procedures, disciplinary processes, and any canons and standards of ethical conduct and/or values statements presently used in their respective agencies. This workshop will: explore the evolution of law enforcement and the role of key values and ethics in the organizational culture; clarify the difference between mission statements and values programs; afford participants the opportunity to assess and/or develop a values statement for their agency; discuss strategies for ingraining the agency’s code of ethics and values statements in training programs and disciplinary procedures supervisory, middle management and executive levels; review strategies for marketing the agency’s values and image both internally and externally.

Topics in this course include patrol tactics, crowd control, horse care, and search and rescue techniques. Class is held at the North Georgia Fairground. Participants must provide their own mounts, gear and horse care. Limit is 16 participants because of limited stall facilities.

This course is designed for officers now assigned to or being considered for bicycle patrol positions. This course is physically demanding and students should be in average or better general condition. Students will be taught the basics of safe and effetive bicycle operations on differing terrains and in all weather.
Required Materials:   Each student attending this course is required to bring the following equipment: police mountain bicycle in good condition, properly fitting bicycle helmet, bicycle gloves, water bottles or personal hydration system, headlight and tail light/reflector, rain gear if desired, proper clothing, duty belt

ITQ04G.   Post Blast Crime Scene Investigation                    16 hrs                      Specialized
This class is for investigators responsible for processing crime scenes involving explosive devices and weapons of mass destruction. The three day class consists of two days of classroom instruction on explosive devices and construction and one day of practical application processing a crime scene on the bomb range consisting of recovering important evidence and reconstruction of the device. This class is restricted to sworn law enforcement due to the sensitive nature of the materials presented. The class will be presented in power point format showing actual devices and compaoenent parts for building explosive devices. Information on the effects and characteristics of different types of explosives will be presented. Successful completion of the class will prepare the investigator for properly processing a crime scene involving explosive devices safely and effectively collecting evidence to help identify and prosecute the responsible parties.

The purpose of this course is to provide guidance to Law Enforcement Administrators and risk managers in dealing with the minefield fo medical, leal and policy issues that surround fitness for duty evaluations in law enforcement. In addition, the course will update agencies on the new legal developments affecting these evaluations and the recently approved IACP Guidelines for Fitness for Duty Evaluations.
